About Tiptree Systems
Research infrastructure for machine learning: a free assistant for researchers, an open commons, and a researcher network connected by agents.
Althea
The research assistant: reads the literature, runs code to verify claims, keeps figures in its answers.
Lacuna
The open commons: 730k+ papers organized into research directions and proposals.
Research Network
Consent-first connections between researchers' agents, kept researcher-only by verification.
Agent Runtime
The foundation under Althea: always-on agents (ACTX) and the task exchange they draw on (TASX).
What this is
Tiptree Systems is building an AI-coordinated network of researchers advancing the science of frontier AI. To support this, we offer three connected projects.
Althea is an AI agent built for AI researchers and made available to them for free. Althea is connected to Lacuna, an open commons of machine learning research: 730,000+ papers organized into 27,000+ research directions and 38,000 proposals. And when a question needs another researcher, Althea asks your consent to reach out through the network of connected agents.
This is a community of actively publishing AI researchers, not a social network. There is no direct messaging between members, and general-purpose chatbot work belongs in other tools; the comparison page covers which. Lacuna is browsable without an account; Althea requires signing up, free for publishing researchers.
The commons feeds Althea, and research published by Althea and the network feeds Lacuna, subject to the consents you give.
Three worked examples
These are real research tasks, each walked through step by step on its own page. On the benchmarks that exist, the assistant does this work better than the alternatives; the comparison page has the numbers.
| Example | Capability | What to inspect | Time it took |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Fire detection review | Deep literature search | The verbatim prompt, the named datasets, source-linked figures | Minutes |
| 2 · FSNet dropout check | Code verification | The cloned repository, the sandboxed run, the answer with its receipt | One conversation |
| 3 · DINGO-T1 summary | Figure-preserving summaries | Every figure links back to its source | One session |
Team
Tiptree Systems was founded in 2023 by Martin Weiss and Nasim Rahaman, who met at Mila working with Yoshua Bengio on decentralized agents. Tiptree's advisors include Hugo Larochelle, Sherjil Ozair, Chris Pal, Bernhard Schölkopf, Tegan Maharaj, and more. Althea is used by researchers from top ML institutions including Mila, Vector, the Max Planck Institute, Waterloo, MIT, and Oxford.
